- It is used both as an optical component as well as a diamond replacement in the jewelry industry or as a ceramic in medical technology
- Pure ZrO2 has two phase transitions regarding the range from melting point to room temperature whereby the monoclinic crystal structure is stable at room temperature. The cubic high-temperature phase can also be stabilized up to room temperature by adding certain oxides. It is common to add Y2O3 (concentration > 10 mol%)

- Transmission range from UV to IR (7µm), not birefringent
