- Birefringent crystal with main applications as a polarizer, wave or retardation plate and VUV filter (steep absorption edge in the VUV)
- The standard is the crystalline modification alpha-quartz (deep quartz), which changes to beta (high) quartz at higher temperatures. The process is reversible but can lead to breaks or cracks in the material. You can still distinguish between left and right-handed quartz
- The manufacturing process is hydrothermal synthesis at high temperatures and pressures
